Four streets radiate from Gloucester city centre, ‘The Cross’. Taking each compass-point street in turn, this walk explores the fascinating range of building stones that make up the urban fabric of central Gloucester. Once you have ‘got your eye in’ you will experience the pleasure of recognising the commonly occurring building material and where it has come from. Some of these stones have been used and reused over and over again to create these buildings, walls and paved ways of this ancient city. The guide draws attention to the great range of stones utilised but also explores why some stones are more popular than others and how the use of building materials has changed over time.
